After supper
Lamplight
When the kitchen quiets, the mill turns to lamplight — a fire in the old drying room, a fiddle some nights, and a separate room for guests who want a livelier hour, kept well away from the sleeping lofts.
The mill after dark
Evenings here are not programmed. The drying room, where grain was once spread over warm floors, is now the gathering room: a wide hearth, deep chairs, a shelf of paperbacks left by guests over the years, and a sideboard of cider and tea you help yourself to. Some nights a local fiddler plays low in the corner; most nights the loudest thing is still the weir outside the window.
We describe Cornmere as a gateway between two moods. The riverfront a short walk down the towpath is a bright casino destination that keeps late hours; the mill is the quiet you come back to. Walk out for the noise if you want it, and return to lamplight and moving water. The house leans neither way — it simply keeps the light on.
The optional gaming room
Off the courtyard, in a converted cart store with its own door, we keep a small gaming room for guests who enjoy it. It is entirely optional and entirely separate — no loft rate includes it, no path to the bedrooms passes through it, and staff never steer you toward it. Entry is limited to guests twenty-one years of age and over, and photo identification is checked at the door.
The room stays small on purpose: a few tables, a handful of machines, soft light, and the same responsible-play notices you will find at the desk. It closes well before the rest of the mill so the courtyard is quiet by the small hours. Guests who would rather it did not exist can pass the whole stay without opening that door, and many do.

Out along the towpath
For guests who want more than a fire and a book, the riverfront is ten minutes on foot and full of life after dark — supper rooms, music bars, and the bright venues near casino frontage that light up the water. Our desk keeps an honest little list of what is worth the walk and what is not, and will happily call you a car for the way back. However late the riverfront runs, the mill keeps lamplight burning for your return.
